General Reflections

Andrea Ahumada Araya:
As a general reflection, I can say that making different projects during the semester helped me a lot. First, because I learned how to use different applications such as power point, movie maker, audacity, blogger, among others., and it is something very useful when talking as a future teacher. I mean, if you want to be updated with interesting material, you need to be checking at least 3 or 4 new programs/applications for your classes. Moreover, studying about the various approaches that a teacher may have in their classes was something very beneficial for me because I could discover that as I consider myself an instrumental user i can use technology in certain activities within the class and also to motivate students, but teachers need to know and consider other ideas to make the most of a class without depending on technology.

On the other hand, I can say that the session that I took the most of it was "Using Websites" because I could collect all the pages that will help me in the future as a teacher so that I can find different resources that will be beneficial.
Really, taking this subject was a great chance where I could learn a lot about different topics (projects, applications, websites, use of technology, among others).

Camila Valenzuela Grollmus:
In my personal opinion, I think that this subject was very important because we learned how to use programs that on the surface they seem to be user friendly, but the truth is that all of them have some complications and if we know how to use them, they are very helpful in different tasks. For instance, I learned to insert audios in PowerPoint presentations and this is useful and meaningful when we want to teach our students different sounds (vowels and consonants). Also, by means of this subject I collected multiple webpages that are perfect for our classes (I mean, when we plan our classes), full of material, images, exercises, etc.

For me, this subject was pretty meaningful and thanks to it I could see things from another angle, that the programs most people use can be great for us as teachers, and we can give those programs another uses.

Movie Maker Project

On one hand, creating the videos was a challenging experience because we had to think about a topic, then a story and how we wanted to develop that story. It was a challenge also the fact that we use a different platform to create the video, called "iMovie" and not the typical "Movie Maker" (which is very easy to use), in fact, we had no clue of how to use iMovie, it seemed to be complicated but anyway we find the way to use it an finish the video.
But in the other hand, the experience was very funny and we had a great time, we really enjoyed filming, acting, adding the effects to the videos and all the work behind creating a video.

Now, the idea of the video is useful for both student and teacher. The teacher can use this video for example, to start a new project with the students. As this video is about a "tour" in Iquique, they can continue the tour in another place. In general, the task of making a video can be used in different topics and the teacher can find different applications, so thanks to this project we could realize the importance of using technology.
This video is about a tour around Iquique city. It has 5 stops: Iquique harbor, Corbeta Esmeralda Museum, Plaza Prat and Baquedano Street, Zofri and Cavancha. The guide shows his friend these famous places of Iquique giving a review of each of them. The idea of creating this video is that students can have an example of what they have to do as an English project, a city tour. They have to give directions, create their own review of each place, among others.

Using Websites

Using and evaluating websites was a great opportunity for collecting new pages for our "Teacher's store". It is true that not all websites are mainly about Teaching English, but we can take at least one idea or material for each of them. It is very important to mention that we can find useful websites by taking into account their accuracy, currency, content and functionality.
This task was quite helpful for us and as a reflection we can say that it was very interesting because nowadays we can discover fantastic material and resources for our classes and practicum.

Here, you have the websites we evaluated:

Audio Recording Project

We consider that creating this task was very funny and entertaining. Taking into account that we just had the activity in a written way, recording our voices was not something really difficult but useful and enriching. We learned how to use some applications to join all the audios as well as having a good intonation and rhythm in terms of our pronunciation when recording this assignment. We think that this is a great idea for showing our students different resources, we mean, authentic material that was created by us.

           At the zoo!                             (speaking activity)
Introduction: This activity is for second grade, the unit is called : At the zoo!. The pronunciation items are: zebra, snake, salamander, salmon, sea turtle and zookeeper.
The activity consists of looking at pictures and make up sentences.

It is important to mention that the warm up was already developed, the content was presented and the class is in the Gagne’s step number 5 (elicit performance).

T: Now you have to form pairs. Are you ready?
S: Yesss
T: I will give you the instructions, so pay attention: you will receive six pictures, three for each of you and what you have to do is to look at the pictures and make up sentences, what is to “make up” sentences? To create sentences!
For example: In this picture I see a lion in the zoo and in the other picture I see a bear in the zoo. So, do you understand the instructions?
S: Yes miss!
T: Okay very good, so here you have the pictures for each pair and you have to take turns. You will have 7 minutes to do it. Ok, let’s work!

(While the students are working the teacher is monitoring their work)

S1: In this picture I see zebra in the zoo.
S2: Yeah!, in this picture I see a salmon that … Miss, how do you say ESTANQUE?T: Fish pond, darling.

Another pair:
S1: In this picture I see a zookeeper in the door.
S2: I have this picture and I see a snake in the zoo.
T: Well done my kids!

Conclusion: The idea of this activity is that students identify the vocabulary items (saw in last classes) and practice the sounds /s/ and /z/, as well as creating sentences and interact with their classmates.
